Framing an Associates Degree

Posted by: SpecialBuzzr   in Associates Degrees

frameI chose to get an Associates Degree before I got my Bachelors Degree. I knew that I planned on getting a four year degree but I wanted to make sure that I had a degree under my belt just in case something happened and I couldn’t complete my Bachelors right away.

When I graduated from the Associates program, I took my diploma and put it away in a drawer. I felt like it wasn’t a “real” diploma since it wasn’t from a four year degree program. It seemed silly to put this degree into a diploma frame since I knew I’d be getting another diploma soon. Later when I got my Bachelors Degree, I did the same thing. This time I felt like a “real” diploma had to be for a more advanced degree like a PhD.

My mom was really upset that I didn’t want to hang up these degrees. To appease her, I bought a graduation picture frame and framed the photo of me accepting the diploma that was taken on graduation night. I gave it to her as a gift.

At the time, I thought it was silly that she wanted me to celebrate getting a two-year degree. Looking back, though, I realize that it wasn’t easy to get that degree. I was working full-time and going through the process of applying to a four year college. I earned that degree. I think I might frame it and hang it after all!

Get into School with a Golf Scholarship

   Posted by: Spaycial   in Sports

The cost of higher education is constantly going up, which makes scholarships and grants increasingly more important for students who cannot afford college on their own, or who don’t have help from their parents.

Football scholarships are almost a cliche, and as a result many students overlook the scholarships that are given out for other sports, such as golf. Yes, if you are good at golf, you may be able to get a scholarship and continue your golf education in college! It doesn’t necessarily have to be an academy of golf that you apply to, either — just like with other sports scholarships, many regular universities and colleges have golf scholarships.

Of course, sports scholarships are not the only way to get into college. There are many other options for scholarships and grants. For instance, if you are a first-generation college student — i.e., the first person in your family to attend college — you may be able to get special scholarships from the government and from the school you attend.

There are also tons of scholarships for specific areas of study. Some may require you to simply demonstrate that you need the financial assistance, while others may have you write an essay on an assigned topic.

There are far more scholarships available than most students realize, so it is important to thoroughly exhaust your options before you start applying for student loans. Student loans may be funded privately or via the government, and usually you don’t have to start repaying them until you graduate. But what most people don’t realize is that the interest usually continues to accrue this entire time! So the more money you can get via scholarships and grants, the less money you will owe on your student loans once you graduate.

Childhood Dreams

Posted by: Zinney   in Culinary Arts

Every child growing up has a dream of what he or she will be as an adult. Some children wish to emulate a parent or close relative while others latch onto a dream all of his or her own. Choosing a dream as a child could help formulate choices from an early age. While some kids dream about being a firefighter, a doctor, a teacher or a truck driver, I wanted to be a chef. While the kids in high school were applying for colleges, I was submitting my application to cooking schools and culinary arts programs.

After being accepted to a culinary arts college, I began taking classes that I had often dreamed of. Learning how to chop vegetables like a professional was thrilling for me. I learned the techniques of sautéing and blanching food items. I toke the lessons I had learned and used them in my internship at a local restaurant. Pursuing culinary arts degrees prepared me for with superb training to join a top notch fine dining restaurant as an assistant chef. Fulfilling my lifelong dream of becoming a chef started with playing in my toy room in my toy kitchen. Now, I work in one of the fanciest kitchens I could have ever dreamed of.

You know, it can be hard to know where to allocate precious financial resources when money is tight and the job picture is uncertain. However, professional education is almost always a good investment, especially if you’re investing in something like home health caregiver training. Being trained with tools like Alzheimer’s training DVDs or fall prevention resources can ensure that you are steadily employed no matter how bad the rest of the economy looks. The truth is, there is a crying need in our health care system for home health care workers because the oldest members of the Baby Boom Generation are starting to get really old and require constant care. That’s why so many home health care agencies are making serious investments in direct care worker training materials, so that they can keep up with the burgeoning demand for health care services. There are literally not enough people to fill all the positions out there in home health care, which is certainly better than you can say about most other sectors of the economy right now where thousands of people are losing their jobs each week. Getting home health care training is a smart move, both now, and into the future, as this article from the Bureau of Labor Statistics makes crystal clear: http://www.bls.gov/oco/cg/cgs035.htm.

Steps Towards Advanced Work in Physical Therapy

Posted by: SpecialBuzzr   in Health & Medical

physical-therapyA student interested in doing advanced educational work in the field of physical therapy would want to take the following steps to make that happen:

- Review different degree options within this field and compare them. For example, compare a Human Movement Program with an Occupational Therapy Program. Select the program that best suits you.

- Review different schools that offer an advanced degree in this program. Determine whether an online or offline program is right for you. The Arizona School of Health Sciences Online Programs are a great example of what would be right for this career path.

- Apply to the school of choice.

- Attend the school upon acceptance. Work hard to make sure that your grades stay high.

- Make sure to get work experience in the area of physical therapy throughout the time that you are in school. This makes you a better candidate for getting a job.

- Graduate and start looking for a job in the physical therapy industry. A lot of people out there need your help so you shouldn’t have any trouble getting work!

The basic steps for this degree are similar to those of any other advanced degree. Work hard before and during school so that you can enjoy your work after you graduate.

USGBC and LEED

Posted by: Zinney   in Trades & Vocational

Everblue Training InstituteI’ve looked into usgbc leed. It has sparked some interest in the last couple of years. Actually, it has sparked a lot of interest. I’ve also looked at the leed courses. Being leed certified is the way of the future. Knowing about LEED is something that every contractor, builder, designer, and engineer needs to have in his or her toolbox. I think it is a pretty good asset, and a great selling point for anybody looking to advance their career. As a long time civil engineer, I’ve found that expanding your certification range can really help increase your income. It makes you a much more viable professional, and it keeps you up to date with the latest standards. Being up to date is very important with all the changes in technology. With these great strides you need to embrace the changes, and adapt to become a successful professional.

Standards are not only important, but they are required for any type of government contract. It is important that you follow these standards to comply with any government policy. Become an LEED professional, and receiving certification will help you understand the standards in place for being ‘green’. This is the direction the world is heading.

Social Ignorance is Not Bliss

Posted by: admin   in Culinary Arts

I recently moved to a new city and started running with a new crowd of friends.  A handful of them go to a “culinary training institute” downtown.  They all seem like nice, down to earth people, but I’m worried about offending them.

I’ve been able to watch my mouth so far, but I get a little “simple-tongued” after drinking a little and a couple of times I almost let phrases like “culinary cooking schools” and “cooking schools” slip instead “culinary arts” and the like.  Like I said, they don’t seem like the type to get offended over a little lingual gaffe, but I don’t like to offend people.

I guess I could just keep watching my mouth, but I can’t help but wondering if “cooking school” and similar variations are offensive to people in the culinary world.

You know, I work for a magazine and people ask me about journalism school.  It sounds a little simpler than the effort my degree entailed, but I’m not insulted.  Maybe a better example is that I work on my MFA in creative writing part time, and people refer to it as writing school.  Now, that really simplifies what I am doing, but it seems to be acceptable.

They need to offer classes for these types of social issues.

Tips for Saving Money for College

   Posted by: Spaycial   in General

College planning strategies: Save, save, save!

College planning strategies: Save, save, save!

College is expensive, so most students will have to make a concerted effort to save up for their college costs. If you are trying to save money for college, here are some tips to help you out.

  • Start saving NOW. It’s never to early to start a college savings account. Even if you don’t plan on going for several years, start putting money aside so that you have some saved when you are ready to hit the books.
  • Find little ways to save money. For instance, make your own coffee and put your daily Starbucks allowance into savings, or eat in more often. Every time you cut back where you would normally spend, put the savings into your college account!
  • Automatically deposit some of every paycheck into savings. If you’re no good at cutting back on the spot, set up your direct deposit or your account to automatically move a certain amount into savings with every paycheck. That way if the money isn’t there, you just won’t spend it.
  • Get a second job or do some side work, and put the extra money into savings. Babysitting, selling on eBay, or working a part-time job on the weekends are all ways that you can earn some additional money to put towards your college costs.

Saving can be difficult and frustrating, so don’t expect too much of yourself. Remember that your college savings should increase slowly over time, not overnight. Trying to save everything at once is like going on a crash diet: You’re likely to get withdrawals and binge!

One of the scariest things about the U.S. economy right now is that the recession isn’t confined to one region, one industry or localized in any way. The economy is shrinking across the board, and it seems like every type of job is being hit. There is one exception to that blanket statement, however, and that’s the medical profession. Even in bad economic times people still need to visit their doctors it seems, and in bad times it seems like there are more accidents and injuries. That may not be quite true statistically, but it feels that way.

So what’s a hard-working, ambitious person to do in times like these when it seems like one’s opportunities are severely limited? My advice is turn to some type of medical specialty. Get trained so that you can work in medical records, become a physician’s assistant, get a nursing degree, get a Health Science Masters. Did you know that it’s now possible to get advanced degrees online, so you’re spared the expense and bother of commuting, buying a parking pass, and shelling out a small fortune for gas every week? Well, you can, and there are some top-flight educational institutions such as the Arizona School of Health Sciences where you can get a Masters, or even a Doctor of Health Sciences online to help guarantee that you’ll be fully employed with a good job even in the scariest economic times.

Strategy groups and job searching

Posted by: Zinney   in Business Management

My college has a great career service center. With graduating around the corner I’ve been working closely with a career counselor, and building strategies to get that first “real” job. In our group strategy meetings I’ve noticed a lot of alumni are interested in changing career fields. One alumni has her bachelor degree in human resources and is considering a master degree program online.

Several graduates are looking into the growing field of green jobs. As companies redesign themselves and embrace the green revolution, more workers are needed to design and implement environmentally friendly products.

The strategy groups meet monthly and create new action plans to focus their job search. One advantage of the group is the members hold each other accountable for their progress.  Job searching, especially in this economy, can become quite discouraging. The social interaction with other job searchers is a great place to exchange ideas and techniques. In addition, the strategy group creates additional contacts in the corporate network.

Over the last few months, many group members have conducted informational interviews with potential employers which helps to decide what skill sets need to be updated, and provides a corporate contact in your chosen field. Many group members are considering masters MBA in business communications. In these tough economic times strategy groups can help guide a job seekers path.
